Gloria Gaynor is a Disco singer who is best known for singing the Disco anthem "I Will Survive" in 1978.
Gaynor attained modest early success with a couple of disco oriented covers of famous pop tunes. Her first major single was a cover of the Jackson 5 song "Never Can Say Goodbye". It reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and all the way to #1 on the dance charts. She also had a hit with a disco version of the Four Tops hit "Reach Out I'll Be There".
"I Will Survive" was originally released as the B side to the cover of a Righteous Brothers song called "Substitute". When another band had success with the Substitue song, DJs started playing the B side instead. "I Will Survive" went on to become one of the most popular dance songs of all time. |
